NYC - Midtown West: Mé Bar

NYC - Midtown West: Mé Bar

La Quinta Manhattan
17 W. 32nd St., 14th fl., New York, NY 10001

At the rooftop bar of the La Quinta budget hotel in Koreatown, the drinkers—at least, the ones who aren't tourists—are evenly divided between newbies saying "I can’t believe I didn't know about this spot" and old hands nodding knowingly and saying "Yeah, this is my little secret." Indeed it's hard to believe that anything offering such a picture-perfect worm's-eye view of the Empire State Building illuminating the surrounding water tanks would be a secret, but come here after work and you'll likely have one of the round tables all to yourself. The deck isn't much bigger than the average tenement roof, but with broad wood planks, white-painted benches around the perimeter, and folding chairs and umbrellas, it's an effortless simulation of a Hamptons boardwalk. A folder full of delivery menus (plenty of good Korean food around, of course) compensates for the lack of grill. The bar, located in a narrow glass enclosure that provides seating during the winter, is small but adequate, and the drinks are reasonably priced considering the prime realty.

Caption says;

"AAA Wentworth Hotel, 59 West 46th Street, New York City, Phone JU 2-2200

Centrally located in the heart of Manhattan, just off 5th Avenue, 2 blocks from Radio City, and Times Square Theatre Area.
100% air conditioned, 21" Television and radio in all rooms.
Restaurant, bar and Cocktail Lounge. Barber Shop and Manicurist. Family Rates Available."

2 young men of about 21 men were introduced to New York customs early. The receptionist absolutely insisted we should have a porter to carry our bags to our room - no other option! The old guy seemed about 80 and it was warm. We thought he'd pass out. We were on a very tight budget, but he had to be tipped.

The noisy air conditioning kept us awake all night!

World War ll London Blitz Diary (A Woman's Revelations Enduring War and Marriage) (1939-1940)

Imagine yourself seeing hundreds of Messerschmitt war planes overhead and hearing the explosion of bombs being dropped around you. Wondering if this is the day one will fall on your house.

Ruby Side Thompson’s personal diary was written during the terrifying World War Two London Blitz. Her diary is a true and detailed account of what she experienced during that horrific time. The diary chronicles Ruby's struggle to survive in the midst of a horrendous war, where London is bombed nightly.

Ruby speaks candidly about her unhappiness enduring an unsatisfactory marriage. She was the mother of seven sons, two of whom were enlisted in the R.A.F. One of which became an amputee as the result of hitting a land mine and the other son was captured and sent to a concentration camp as a prisoner of war. Her tale is a mix of the commonplace and the historic as seen through her eyes.

The diary was an outlet for Ruby’s thoughts and feelings that could not be spoken out loud; however, in publishing the diary it gives readers an honest and unfiltered look back at a time that may have been long since forgotten.

Join Ruby on her trying journey as she tries to keep her life and family together during this difficult time in history.

This is volume one of a four volume series written by Ruby Alice Side Thompson.

The blockage was not helped by the fact a class 33 with two ploughs was buried up to it's roof in a cutting near Lenham. The line was eventually cleared by a Rotary Snowblower brought down from Scotland.

World War II London Blitz Diary, Volume 2, 1941 (A Woman's Revelations Enduring War and Marriage)

This Diary was written during the World War two London Blitz years by a woman experiencing the nightly terrifying bombings. The diary reveals what the average Londoner experienced during that time; events that today have been forgotten or lost to younger generations. The diary was not written for publication but as an outlet for the author's thoughts and feelings that could not be spoken.
"September 21, 1941 . . . We are hypnotized by propaganda; by the impact of particular places and persons; by religion, by war, and by ourselves, by our own terrible easy suggestibility. We are sheep, dumb fool sheep. Consider this huge derision of patriotism and of war.
As I looked over Kent yesterday, so peaceful, all the harvest in, so green, so quiet, the sense of the folly of the war enveloped me ever more tightly and suffocating then in Blitzed London. Much of London is offensive to the sight, so that when one sees portions of it utterly destroyed unconsciously one is reconciled to the destruction. . . . The further I went from London the more I was convinced that war is only made by the few bad men in power, for their own profit. War pays the armament makers. The puzzle is: Why do common men obey the warlords? Why? Because they are hypnotized by words, deluded by propaganda and patriotism. Oh God! What fools men are!
. . . One thing I determined, and that is, to guard my own mind. That seems the most important thing to me today, to protect my mind and to keep out the crazy propaganda and all the world’s false beliefs. The everlasting verities, those are what I want to discern and the realities, and mainly the beautiful and good realities. War is a reality and Hitler is a reality, but neither Hitler nor war is enduring; both will pass away, but the grass will remain, beauty will remain."

363/365 at the airport

363/365 at the airport

Sitting at Gatwick airport, waiting for our flight home, made me remember a book I once read by French anthropologist Marc Auge, about non-places, such as airports, hotels or supermarkets, which he describes as transient places with anonymous people passing through. They have their own logic, which seems to be rather universal. More or less the same schema can be followed to operate in them, wherever you are in the world.

I don't find airports non-places, but rather situationally meaningful, evoking strong personal reactions. They are places of good-byes, reunions and beginning adventures. These red neon lights depict my emotions connected with departures and arrivals.
